Deceptive image created by Dominion Energy that fails to illustrate the 120 foot wide clear cut path associated with the Kraken Loop
TLDR: Dominion Energy is using inaccurate images to downplay the impact of the Kraken Loop Project.
The Kraken Loop Project is a proposal by Dominion Energy to construct a new, approximately 70-mile 500-kilovolt (kV) transmission line through Louisa, Spotsylvania, Caroline, Stafford, and Fauquier counties. The line will go from Lake Anna to the Kraken Substation in Caroline County and will eventually to a proposed substation in Fauquier County. The Kraken’s 120 foot tall monopoles require a 120 foot wide right of way access – almost as wide as I-95 — that will require clear cutting of millions of trees, devastating our ecosystems lowering property values, and raising taxes throughout these counties.
Instead of showing what a 120 foot clear cut path will look like, Dominion Energy is publishing images like this one:

This image shows a cute little power pole tucked between some adorable bushes — hardly noticeable.
But this is what the line actually looks like:

All of the area between those purple lines will be clear cut to make space for the Kraken. Note the following:
- The entire backyard of the home shown in the image will be clear cut, including the backyards of the adjacent properties.
- These homeowners, who once had several hundred feet of trees offering privacy to home areas will be looking directly into each other’s back windows.
- Note that the power line is not situated dead center of the right of way. Is Dominion planning to add TWO power lines to the area behind these homes?
This isn’t my house — why should I care?
Sadly, losing the privacy offered by these trees will decrease the values of the homes in these images. As their property values decrease, the amount of taxes paid by these home owners will decrease. In order to maintain current tax revenue, Stafford county will be forced to raise taxes on all homeowners to maintain current services. YOUR taxes will increase because of the Kraken.
The Kraken might not be in our backyards, but we all will pay for the Kraken.
